MELAKA, April 20 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Karate Federation (MAKAF) is maintaining a three-gold target at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand this December.

MAKAF president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad said they are targeting gold medals in men’s and women’s kumite and kata events.

"Despite targeting only three gold medals, it is possible for our 18-member squad to return home with more,” he told reporters after chairing MAKAF’s Exco meeting here today.

It is understood that karate would offer the same number of events as the previous edition in Cambodia in 2023 although the total number of medals to be contested in Thailand is a record 585.

The 2025 SEA Games will be held in Bangkok, Chonburi and Songkhla from Dec 9 to 20.

At the 2023 SEA Games, Malaysia targeted three golds in karate but won four.

He said the SEA Games in Thailand will also serve as a platform to select the best athletes to represent the country at the Asian Games in Japan next year.

Nur Azmi, who is also the Olympic Council of Malaysia deputy president, said the 18 karatekas for the 2025 SEA Games will be selected based on their performance in 13 domestic and international tournaments.

"This includes the Karate1 Series A Championship, which will take place at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur from Oct 3 to 5, featuring participation from 126 countries,” he added.
