MELAKA, May 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Karate Federation (MAKAF) is committed to strengthening its development programmes to produce more athletes capable of winning gold medals in major international competitions.

Its president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad said the development programme, which began last March, is also an early preparation for the 2027 SEA Games, where Malaysia will be the host, and the 2026 Asian Games.

"So far, it involves 16 kumite athletes and 10 kata, who will then be absorbed into the national training camp based on their potential and performance.

"This is our mission and vision for the development programme to ensure that karate continues to excel and contribute medals to the country," he told reporters at the Aidilfitri Open House of the federation in Ujong Pasir here last night.

Nur Azmi said MAKAF also collaborated with the National Sports Council (MSN) to organise a championship in Bukit Serindit, here involving athletes aged between 15 and 17 under a talent development programme.

"These athletes will also be included in the Malaysian karate talent programme held in Asahan, Jasin, and conducted three times every year," he said.
