KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 (Bernama) -- The inaugural Malaysia Towerrunning University Championship, scheduled to take place at University College Sedaya International (UCSI) here on May 18, is hoped will be a breeding ground for more high-performing tower runners.

Soh Wai Ching, the founder of the Malaysian Towerrunning Association, said that the championship, in collaboration with the UCSI student committee ‘Youth Beyond Boundaries’, is in conjunction with National Youth Day celebrated annually on May 15.

"Our goal is to scout for more tower running talents with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), youth partners, Youth Beyond Boundaries and UCSI.

"Malaysia is building a strong community that enjoys tower running, with the opportunity to be listed in the 2027 SEA Games. We have already met with the Director-General of the National Sports Council, Abdul Rashid Yaakub, last month on the matter," he told reporters here today.

The tower running champion expects around 200 teams from universities across the country to participate in the championship, with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim having confirmed their participation.

Earlier, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Adam Adli Abd Halim launched the championship, which offers a total cash prize of RM16,800 through five contested categories: university men, university women, university teams, open men and open women.

"I am confident that this competition will play a significant role in producing the future generation of tower running stars," said Adam Adli.
