Sea Games: Ocm Hope Sports Hosted In 2025 And 2027 Editions Will Be Similar
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) will propose that sports included in the 2027 SEA Games hosted by Malaysia will be similar to the sports programme listed by Thailand who host the 2025 SEA Games.
OCM president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said the OCM secretary-general Datuk Mohd Nazifuddin Mohd Najib will submit the proposal to the SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) in an attempt to host sports included by Thailand when Malaysia play host for the 2027 edition.
Mohamad Norza said the proposal was important to ensure there is continuity in the type of games hosted, so that development programmes initiated by the respective countries will be effective to groom young athletes who will serve as the back up squad.
“We want OCM and the National Sports Council to work closely and decide the type of sports to be contested when Malaysia host the games in 2027. This is also important to ensure consistency in the type of sports organised by every host country.
“Through such a move, athletes involved in development programmes will be able to represent the country in 2027, if they are not ready by 2025. This will help training programmes to be consistent.
We hope there will be a seamless transition from one addition to another,” he told reporters after the OCM Executive Council meeting cum the 42nd Annual General Meeting, here today.
Thailand who host the 33rd edition of the SEA Games in 2025, have named three host cities, Bangkok, Chonburi and Songkhla, where events will be held during the games scheduled from Dec 9-20, 2025.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Norza said the main venue for the 2027 SEA Games hosted by Malaysia would be decided after OCM gets the support of the government to ensure Malaysia is picked as the host.
“Once they (government) say yes, then we will set and establish joint-cooperation between the government and OCM. That is where we setup in detail and decide whether Kuala Lumpur or other states, we will keep you updated on that,” he said.
He hoped a special competition committee be set up for the 2027 SEA Games just like what was done when Malaysia hosted the 2017 edition of the games through the Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC).
