PHNOM PENH, May 6 (Bernama) -- Following are brief news items involving Malaysian athletes at the 2023 SEA Games here today:

 

CHINLONE CAMP MISSES OUT ON BRONZE

Malaysia failed to win bronze in men’s chinlone (non-repetition primary) when they found Laos too hot to handle at the National Training Sport Center here today.

In the bronze medal match, the national squad collected a total of 274 points in both sets while Laos obtained 298 points.

In the gold medal match, the host team amassed 337 points to beat Thailand, who managed only 310 points.

 

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL SQUAD FAIL TO MAKE SEMIS

The national men’s volleyball team’s hope of qualifying for the semi-finals of the 2023 SEA Games was dashed after losing to Vietnam in their last Group B match at the National Olympic Stadium today.

The Malaysians needed to beat Vietnam to make the last four but lost 18-25, 20-25, 23-25.

With the defeat, the national team will be playing in the fifth to eighth placing matches.

 

TWO SILAT EXPONENTS QUALIFY FOR SEMIS

Two national silat exponents gave a spirited display to qualify for the semi-finals of the individual artistic pencak silat at the 2023 SEA Games today.

In the quarter-finals at the Chroy Changvar Convention Centre, Nur Syafiqah Hamzah defeated the Philippines’ Filipina Mafry Francine with a score of 9.960 - 9.925.

In the men’s category, Muhammad Khairul Shaddad Ardi advanced to the last four by eliminating Laos’ Chomsy Sayasan with a score of 9.955 - 9.915.

 

WOMEN’S T20 TEAM SCORE FIRST WIN

After losing by 12 runs to Thailand in their opening Group A  Twenty20 (T20) match, the national squad registered a win against the Philippines.

The national squad won the match at the AZ Group Cricket Oval with 10 wickets.

Malaysia recorded 23 runs with 2.3 overs while the Philippines registered 21 runs and 20 overs.

 

MEN’S TRIO IN CHESS OUK TRANG LOSE ALL MATCHES

The national chess ouk trang trio ended their challenge in the men’s 60-minute triples at the bottom of the table without any win after the round-robin competition today.

In their fifth match, the national trio of Eshwant Singh Anoop Singh, Nhavin Kumaresan and Tin Shan Wen lost to Vietnam’s Nam Thang Hoang, Quoc Dung Tran and The Anh Duong 1-0 at the Royal University of Phnom Penh.
